Oil Painting and Newspaper on Canvas
31x41cm
This work is inspired by a Korean folk song about a peasant named Seodong spreading rumors about a nonexistent affair between him and a princess, eventually leading to the exile of the princess. I noticed that the story, where rumors were ignorantly spread without considering the source and possible consequences, parallels today’s social media culture, where information is often shared carelessly without sufficient efforts to verify its accuracy or considerations of its potential influence.
In the painting, a woman wearing a dress is inside a dark room. The thread between her fingers transforms into fabric, which the lady uses to weave a silken screen. The screen finally transforms into a newspaper. The woman making the silk screen with a spinning wheel symbolizes the persistence of human behavior, using traditional methods to create modern media. The lady looks ignorant of the information she’s delivering, symbolizing that those who attempt to take advantage of spreading misinformation do not care whether it is true or not. The frame of the painting has been matted with pieces of actual newspaper. This represents that an excessive amount of information makes it harder to determine the truth.
